Sambar High Country Hunt
Sent in by Tom Gordon
There’s a feeling that’s hard to describe when you shoulder a backpack and head into the mountains. It taps into something primitive—relying solely on yourself and the gear on your back to push deep into the backcountry, where the old stags live and few people are willing to venture.
Everything I needed for several days in the bush—water, food, shelter and gear—was carried on my back in the Moroka.30 75L Alpine Stalker pack. Long days climbing steep ridges, following old game trails and pushing through some of the thickest, most unforgiving country imaginable. It’s physically demanding, but that’s exactly what makes it rewarding
This trip led me through some of the most breathtaking country Australia has to offer.

Along the way I stumbled across an old hunting shack, built by passionate deer hunters back in 2008. Inside was a logbook filled with stories, sightings and memories from those who had walked these mountains before me—a reminder that we’re just another chapter in a much longer story.
I was lucky enough to find a set of 27-inch cast antlers and harvest my first stag, moments I’ll never forget.

But the truth is, that’s not why I keep coming back.
For me, it’s about being immersed in wild country, watching the weather roll through, sitting beside a campfire after a hard day, and waking up to endless mountain views. The deer are what bring me here—but simply being out there is the real reward. Every deer seen or taken is just a bonus
